The Jordan Even Michael Jordan Couldn’t Wait to Wear
Michael Jordan wore some of the greatest sneakers ever created. But if there was one silhouette that stood above the rest for MJ himself, it was the Air Jordan 11.
Designed by Tinker Hatfield during Jordan’s first retirement, the AJ11 was created when there was no guarantee Michael would ever return to basketball. Nike was uncertain about the future of his signature line, but Hatfield kept designing anyway, believing Jordan’s story wasn’t finished yet.
He was right. When Jordan saw the finished Air Jordan 11 in 1995, he loved it so much that he couldn’t wait for its official release. Against Nike’s original plans, MJ debuted the Air Jordan 11 “Concord” during the 1995 NBA Playoffs, instantly putting one of the most futuristic basketball shoes of its era under the brightest spotlight.
And what followed only made the legend bigger.
During the 1995–96 season, Jordan wore the Concord AJ11 throughout the regular season as the Chicago Bulls went 72–10, then an NBA record. He captured the league MVP, All-Star Game MVP, Finals MVP, scoring title, and his fourth NBA championship, launching the Bulls’ second three-peat in the process.
Then came Space Jam, placing the AJ11 in front of millions far beyond basketball and turning the silhouette into a piece of pop-culture history.
Maybe that’s why the Air Jordan 11 means something different.
The AJ1 introduced Michael Jordan to the world. The AJ3 helped keep him with Nike. But the Air Jordan 11 became his favorite. And once you know the story behind it, it’s easy to understand why.

Designed While MJ Was Gone
The story of the Air Jordan 11 becomes even more special when you remember one thing: Michael Jordan wasn’t even playing basketball when its development began.
During Jordan’s first retirement, uncertainty surrounded the future of the Air Jordan line. But Tinker Hatfield kept designing. He believed MJ would eventually return, and he wanted something extraordinary waiting for him when he did.
The result looked unlike anything basketball had seen before.
Hatfield introduced glossy patent leather to give the AJ11 a luxurious, almost formal appearance, while a carbon-fiber spring plate provided performance and stability on court. Ballistic mesh kept the upper lightweight, and the translucent outsole completed its futuristic look.
Hatfield’s vision went beyond performance. He wanted to create a basketball sneaker stylish enough to be worn with a suit.
That combination of sport and luxury changed the perception of what a basketball shoe could be. The Air Jordan 11 wasn’t designed simply to perform on the hardwood. It was designed to belong anywhere.

From Concord to Space Jam: The Colorways That Made History
A legendary design needs legendary moments, and the Air Jordan 11 had plenty of them.
It began with the “Concord,” the pair Michael Jordan famously debuted during the 1995 NBA Playoffs. Its clean white mesh, black patent leather, and icy outsole looked unlike anything else on the court, instantly turning the AJ11 into an icon.
Then came the “Bred.” Wearing the black-and-red AJ11 during the 1996 NBA Finals, Jordan completed Chicago’s historic 72-win season by capturing his fourth championship and Finals MVP, on Father’s Day, an especially emotional moment following the death of his father.
But perhaps no AJ11 crossed basketball and pop culture quite like the “Space Jam.” The black-and-royal colorway became forever linked to the 1996 movie Space Jam, where Jordan wore the silhouette alongside Bugs Bunny and the Tune Squad.
Later releases such as the “Cool Grey” proved the AJ11 didn’t need an original Bulls colorway to become a classic, while annual holiday retros turned the silhouette into something close to a sneakerhead tradition.
Concord. Bred. Space Jam. Cool Grey. Different colorways. Different memories. One silhouette that never stopped making history.

Why the Air Jordan 11 Still Means More
More than three decades later, the Air Jordan 11 still feels special. It carried Michael Jordan through one of the greatest seasons in basketball history, crossed from the hardwood into pop culture through Space Jam, and proved that a performance sneaker could look just as powerful off the court.
But perhaps the greatest compliment comes from MJ himself. Among all the legendary Air Jordans created throughout his career, the AJ11 has long been recognized as his favorite.
And it’s easy to see why. The Air Jordan 11 isn’t remembered for just one game, one championship, or one colorway. Concord, Bred, Space Jam, Cool Grey, each pair carries a different piece of the legacy. Some Jordans made history. The Air Jordan 11 became part of it.
